Gillians Holiday Recount

The Hamilton Gardens!
After an awesome 11 weeks of school, we finally had a holiday!
On the first week of the holidays it wasn’t so great, because my Mum and Dad were at work so we had my brothers 15 year old friend came here to look after us. His name is Lucas; the last of the week was like this, but my cousin Angelo was at our house.
On Good Friday we woke up at 5am, we were going to Rororua, Taupo and Hamilton with some Filipino friends from Church. Firstly we went to our friend Jameel’s house to meet up with everyone. My brothers and I stayed inside the car to stay nice and warm.
When we were all ready we all left for having breakfast at Huntly McDonalds! I had 3 pancakes, and one hot chocolate. I felt spoilt. Later on we drove to Hamilton and stopped for a while. Then we started driving again. Soon we were at the Hamilton gardens.
First of all, we fed some ducks. It was quite funny because the ducks were fighting over the bread! J
Later we scampered to the gardens. The first garden was the English Garden; we saw loads of pretty and bright flowers. Afterwards we went to the American Garden. It was really cool because it had a clear pond that looked really cool! We had a few photos taken, that looked really cool! After the American Garden, we went to the Chinese Garden. At the Chinese garden, we went through a tunnel and we saw an even BIGGER pond! There was also a brown bridge with lots of lanterns on it. My friend Jameel was with me, my mum and my Auntie. Jameel and I walked through lots of bamboo trees. There was a tiny Chinese gazebo at the top. Jameel found a bush that had some sort of berries on it. They were indigoish and blueish.
After the Chinese gardens, we scurried away to the Indian gardens to see the cultural and beautiful flowers, but we weren’t expecting two beautiful fountains there. The only disgusting and sad part was when Jameel and I saw a dead Weta on the ground on top of a muddy footprint.
Next we went next door to the Japanese Gardens! The path was made out of stones, the flowers looked like a rainbow, and the sound effects sounded wonderful like a conch shell. With my camera I took some close up photos of flowers. They turned out to look very professional.
Lucky last…the Italian Gardens! In the Italian gardens we saw a huge temple sort of looking thing; it was a beautiful cream colour. There was also a big lion fountain there and many ponds. Soon we left for Lake Taupo for lunch. The Hamilton Gardens was so much fun!!!!!!!!! I wish I could go there again!  JJJJJ

My Auckland Museum Trip

On Thursday 19 May, the year 4s went to the amazing Auckland Museum!

Travelling
All the kids travelled by bus and so did most adults. Quite a few of the adults travelled in their own cars. My parent helper was Jun Ma, Emma’s dad. He went on the big, noisy bus with us!

Arrival
When we arrived, we jumped off the bus and went into the huge Auckland Museum. Our first stop was morning tea. I did bag pack, which meant that I had to carry Emma’s things in my bag. Therefore, I gave her the container for her morning tea. We ate and laughed at each other and made silly jokes!

Free Exploration Time
Right then, we had half an hour of free exploration time. Jun Ma had already been to the museum so he knew some cool places to go to. Our first place was the Underwater Sea World. Dolphins here, sharks there made the underwater place a wonderful and interesting place to observe. Later we went to the Volcanic Centre. There were stones to lift and it said, “Watch your hands” which made me think that if you lifted it, it would explode. Therefore, I asked Jun Ma very politely, “Can you please lift it for us?” Jun Ma replied, “Sure!”  I was excited! He lifted it up and said, “That is not heavy but it sure is slippery and slimy.” We walked across a street and passed an earthquake room. One of my friends, Grace, was standing there, so Emma and I asked her if she had been in it. Grace said she had sure been in it. She did mention that it was very scary. I stood up, asked Jun Ma and in we went. I sat on the comfortable couch while Jun Ma stood right behind me. No, it was not scary at the beginning; it was just two people speaking on television. Nevertheless… then the news broadcast stopped and the big screen began. It was a volcano which was not scary. On the other hand, maybe it was… a little shake shook us... that was scary, and then another one came. When it finally finished, I walked slowly out. Half an hour was now gone, and we had to back to Mrs Morris.

Archeologist
When we got to Mrs Morris, we went up the stairs with a bannister to listen to an Archeologist. The Archeologist we met was named, Marhara. He took us to the children’s education room where it was very hot and stuffy. We got into teams and Mr Manning, Jasmin’s dad, was my group’s guide. The first box we had, had a flint in it and a striker. Marhara, came along and asked if we knew what it was. At that stage we did not know. He showed us how to make a spark. Rachel was the first person to try it out. She made a perfect spark, and next it was my turn. I made a small spark, tried again, and made a bigger spark, which was scary.

Lunch
After all that work, we got some rest. We walked to get our bags out from the cages, and we scampered to the upstairs lunchroom. Even before I opened my lunchbox, I saw an awesome light…a chandelier decorated with forks, spoons and knives
Runaway
We were exhausted, and Mrs Morris knew that we needed a break and some fresh air. Therefore, she took us outside and let us has a little run.

Home
I felt so sad when it was to leave see.  I had a great time with my friends. I sat at the back of the bus next to Emma and Mrs Morris. I told Mrs Mclean and Mrs Morris what I enjoyed most of all.

School
When we arrived back to school, we got a chance to play on the senior adventure playground. Many children left early, so did Jun Ma and Emma. This was the end of the Amazing Auckland Museum trip!

Spider Report

A spider is a member of the Arachnid’s family.

A spider has only two body parts, the cephalothorax and the abdomen. The cephalothorax is the main part of the spider. It does the most work and is where the fangs, the head and the eyes are located. Each part of the spider contains a special part of keeping the spider safe and healthy. Spiders have fangs to use when they’re being attacked or if they are in distress. They inject deadly toxin and knock out the enemy. Then the spider sucks out all the goods by using its fangs like a straw.

Eyesight
A spider has 6 mirrored eyes and 2 normal. This is because the spider needs to stay alert at all times. The 6 mirrored eyes allow the spider to see backwards because a predator might be watching them. The 2 normal eyes allow them to see forward. A spider is a carnivore which means it only eats meat and no vegetables.

A spider spins a web or digs a big hole. These are  both ways a spider can catch food. The strongest web spinner is the orb weaver and the best trapdoor digger is the trap door spider or the taruntala. The point is, it will eat nearly everything that it has in reach like insects and beetles but not the giant centpide, the wasp or us.

Habitat
A spider can live behind your couch and in other places in your house.  It also lives in trees. A spider needs shelter like us but it barges in and makes itself well…at home! A spider is a bit of a rascal but in some ways it’s a good helper. It helps us get rid of all those pesky flies and cockroaches. So next time you’re walking in the garden and you see a spider think do you really want to squash it…
